​Two pieces were juried in to the 50th Anniversary Treasury of Art Show, sponsored by the Vienna Arts Center. My acrylic and ink piece "Safe Zone" was awarded an Honorable Mention ribbon by juror and museum curator Leigh Culver.

Artist’s Statement

 

I began my creative journey during a time of intense personal upheaval. Through my immersion in art, I have experienced a profound sense of healing and restoration. In tandem with my pursuit of art, I have been intentional about spending time in nature. The incredible beauty and symmetry that I have observed in forests, streambeds and rocks have inspired the patterns, hues and surface treatments of my mixed media paintings.

 

The mixed media art form is especially conducive to generating a spirit of renewal. Time spent in the creative process restores me and clears my mental cobwebs. I give myself permission to take risks, to experiment, to accept serendipity. Very often the colors that I mix surprise me in their intensity. Layers of materials yield delightful textures. The capricious movement of paint and ink compels me to surrender all attempts to control the process.

Scary But Necessary (And Not in an Annual Check-up Way)

I've been making a conscious effort to pursue show activity.  My first show in 2017 was open to anyone who had taken classes through The Arts of Great Falls School of Art.  So just by virtue of showing up for class and producing something tangible, I was able to experience the thrill of seeing my work on display. 

In addition, I've begun submitting pieces to juried calls for art and have been accepted in two shows this year at Tryst Gallery in Leesburg.  I also took the leap of marketing my pieces to my co-workers at Freddie Mac during the company's semi-annual art and craft event.  (It's one thing to display your art to perfect strangers but quite another to let your co-workers see it!)

These shows can be humbling experiences since I always find myself in the company of so many more advanced artists.  I can count on learning something during these gatherings.  It's such a blast to chat up creative souls who are so generous in sharing their tips, techniques and shortcuts.

One of the benefits of putting myself out there is discovering that, rather than limiting me, the show themes or parameters actually jump start my creative process and encourage me to test drive new methods of "mixing media."  I'm already pumped up about entering new shows.  Who knows what's ahead , but I guarantee it will be messy!
